Riding the wave of a dramatic financial turnaround in the third quarter of FY26, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is accelerating its capital expenditure plans. In a significant move to enhance production efficiency, Bridge & Roof Co. (India) Ltd., a Central Public Sector Enterprise, has invited bids for critical construction works integral to the Billet Caster Upgradation Project at Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP).
The Core Upgrade: Enhancing Rolling Efficiency
The newly floated tender focuses on the Package-I construction work at the Continuous Casting Plant (CCP). Specifically, the scope involves the construction of a diaphragm wall along the peripheral wall of the scale pit and flume tunnel. These structural enhancements are prerequisites for the upgradation of Billet Casters I & II.
Industry experts note that upgrading billet casters is directly linked to improving the quality of semi-finished steel, which feeds into the rolling mills. "For a plant like Durgapur, which specializes in long products and is the sole producer of forged railway wheels in India, caster efficiency is the bottleneck that defines total output," said a senior sector analyst. "This investment suggests SAIL is preparing DSP for higher throughput and premium grade production."
Interested agencies have until February 20, 2026, to submit their bids, indicating a tight execution timeline favored by the PSU.
Financial Backdrop: Profits Fuel Expansion
The timing of this infrastructure push coincides with SAIL’s impressive financial resurgence. The Maharatna PSU recently reported a 163% year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit for Q3 FY26, reaching ₹374 crore, up from ₹142 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal.
This fiscal confidence is further underpinned by a massive ₹5,000 crore debt reduction achieved in the first nine months of FY26 (9M FY26). With a cleaner balance sheet and a 16% growth in sales volume, SAIL has successfully created the fiscal headroom required to fund brownfield expansions like the one at Durgapur without leveraging its balance sheet aggressively.
Strategic Alignment with Vision 2030
Durgapur Steel Plant currently operates with a crude steel capacity of approximately 2.2 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). Under SAIL’s ambitious expansion roadmap, DSP’s capacity is envisaged to more than double to 4.73 MTPA by 2030-31. The current upgradation of the billet casters is a foundational step in this journey, ensuring the plant can handle the increased volume of liquid steel expected from future blast furnace expansions.
Market Outlook
With the tender closing in late February 2026, work is expected to commence in the first quarter of the new fiscal year. For investors and stakeholders, this development serves as a signal that SAIL is moving from "planning" to "execution" on its brownfield projects, leveraging its current cash-rich position to future-proof its assets against cyclical downturns.
