How Metalsbuy Prices Are Quoted

Every rate on this page is a traded price for material moving through Metalsbuy, quoted in rupees per metric tonne. A ferro alloy price only means something alongside four other things, and all four are shown against each row: the product, the grade, the size, and the delivery basis. Two quotes for “Silico Manganese” are not comparable until you know whether they are 60/14 or 65/16, and whether they are ex works or delivered to your plant.

Most domestic ferro alloy trade in India is quoted EXW Raipur, because production is concentrated in the Chhattisgarh–Odisha belt. Ex works means the price stops at the seller’s gate: freight to your plant is yours to add, and over a few hundred kilometres it is a real part of the landed cost. Export material is quoted differently again — FOB at the load port, typically Vizag — which is why an export number and a domestic number can look far apart and still both be right.

Why Ferro Alloy Prices Move

Ferro alloys are made in submerged arc furnaces, and that decides what drives the price. Electricity is the largest single input cost, so power tariffs move alloy prices directly. Manganese ore is the second: most of it is imported, so seaborne ore prices, freight and the exchange rate all feed through. Only after those comes steel demand.

That is the part buyers most often get wrong. Alloy prices can rise in a flat steel market, or hold while steel falls, because the cost stack underneath them is not the same one. Watching steel prices alone will not tell you when to cover a manganese requirement.

Reading a Quote Before You Compare It

Compare on contained metal, not on the tonne rate. A 65% manganese alloy at a higher rate frequently costs less in use than a 60% one, because you add fewer kilograms and pay freight on less iron. Divide the landed rate by the guaranteed minimum content before deciding.

Then read the elements that are not in the headline. Carbon decides whether an alloy suits your steel grade at all. Phosphorus cannot be refined out downstream and embrittles the finished steel. Size and the proportion of fines change how much of what you bought actually makes it into the metal, because fines oxidise before they can do their work. A test certificate should reference the lot being dispatched, not an earlier heat.
