Vale Boosts 2025 Iron Ore, Copper and Nickel Output on Strong Operational Performance

Brazilian mining major Vale S.A. has reported a strong increase in production of iron ore, copper and nickel in 2025, driven by improved operational efficiency, mine ramp-ups and stable performance across its core assets. The production gains reinforce Vale’s position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of both bulk and energy-transition minerals.

Iron Ore Output Hits Multi-Year High

Vale’s iron ore production rose to approximately 336 million tonnes in 2025, marking an increase of around 3% year-on-year and the company’s highest annual output since 2018. The improvement was primarily supported by higher utilisation rates at its Northern System operations, improved logistics performance and fewer weather-related disruptions.

The production growth allowed Vale to exceed its annual guidance and strengthen its competitiveness against global peers, even as the iron ore market remained sensitive to demand signals from China and global steelmakers.

Copper Production Rises on Strong Mine Performance

Vale also reported a near 10% increase in copper output, with total production reaching around 382,000 tonnes in 2025. The growth was led by improved performance at key operations, including Salobo, as well as higher ore grades and better plant recoveries.

Copper remains a strategic focus for Vale as global demand continues to rise from electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure and grid expansion, positioning the company to benefit from long-term structural demand.

Nickel Output Up Amid Energy Transition Demand

Nickel production increased by roughly 11% year-on-year to about 177,000 tonnes, supported by the ramp-up of key assets and operational stabilisation across Vale’s nickel portfolio. The rise comes at a time when the nickel market is navigating price volatility, oversupply concerns and shifting battery chemistry preferences.

Despite market challenges, Vale reiterated its commitment to maintaining nickel as a core pillar of its portfolio, citing its importance in battery materials and low-carbon technologies.

Operational Risks Remain in Focus

While overall performance remained strong, Vale flagged temporary operational disruptions at two iron ore units in Minas Gerais, where water overflow issues led to permit suspensions. These units account for roughly 2% of Vale’s total iron ore output, and the company stated that it does not expect a material impact on full-year guidance.

Vale continues to engage with regulators to restore operations while reinforcing safety and environmental compliance.

Market Implications

Vale’s stronger-than-expected production in 2025 is likely to:

  • Add incremental supply to the global iron ore market, potentially influencing price dynamics in a demand-sensitive environment.
  • Strengthen long-term supply security for copper and nickel, both critical to the global energy transition.
  • Support Vale’s cash flow generation and shareholder returns, even amid regulatory and market uncertainties.

Overall, the 2025 production data underscores Vale’s operational resilience and its dual role as a supplier of both traditional steelmaking raw materials and future-facing critical minerals.
