NMDC Crosses Key Milestone at 2 MTPA Nagarnar Pellet Plant

NMDC Limited has moved a step closer to commissioning its 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) pellet plant at Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh, with the successful light-up of the plant's Straight Grate Indurating Machine on 28 August 2026.

The development may sound like a technical milestone, but it is an important stage in bringing the project into operation. The indurating machine is central to the pellet-making process, where green pellets are dried, heated, hardened and cooled before becoming suitable for use in ironmaking and steelmaking. NMDC has now commenced the dry-out process, taking the project further along the commissioning route.

A critical piece of a 2 MTPA project

The Nagarnar facility is designed to produce 2 million tonnes of iron ore pellets annually. At the centre of the plant is the Straight Grate Indurating Machine, which handles the thermal treatment required to convert green pellets into finished, high-strength pellets.

The technology for the machine has been provided by the Metso Outotec–SMS Group, while the project execution is being handled by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The successful light-up and beginning of dry-out indicate that the equipment has moved beyond the construction stage and into one of the critical phases preceding full commissioning.

For a pellet plant, this stage matters because the indurating machine is not just another auxiliary system. The quality and strength of finished pellets depend heavily on the controlled sequence of drying, preheating, firing and cooling carried out through this process.

The project is part of a larger NMDC value chain

What makes the Nagarnar pellet plant more significant is its connection with NMDC's broader raw material infrastructure. The company has been developing an integrated chain that links its iron ore operations at Bacheli with Nagarnar.

Along with the 2 MTPA pellet plant, the larger project includes a 2 MTPA iron ore beneficiation plant and a slurry pipeline connecting the upstream and downstream facilities. NMDC has described the combination as part of its effort to move further into value-added iron ore products rather than remaining limited to mining and selling raw ore.

The basic idea is straightforward. Iron ore from NMDC's mining operations can be beneficiated, transported as slurry and eventually converted into pellets at Nagarnar. Once fully operational, this would give the company a more integrated route from mine to value-added product.

NMDC had earlier kept the project on hold

The Nagarnar pellet project has not had a completely straightforward journey. NMDC had previously paused work on the pellet and beneficiation facilities while reconsidering the project's longer-term configuration.

The company had indicated in earlier investor discussions that it wanted the 2 MTPA pellet plant to have provision for a future expansion to 6 MTPA, with common facilities planned accordingly. At that stage, NMDC was looking to avoid creating separate infrastructure for multiple phases if the capacity was expanded later.

The current project being commissioned remains the 2 MTPA facility. NMDC's earlier discussions around a potential future move to 6 MTPA should not be confused with the capacity currently under commissioning.

From construction to commissioning

The successful light-up on 28 August does not mean the plant has started commercial pellet production yet. There are still commissioning activities and system integration work to be completed before the facility reaches regular operations.

However, the milestone does narrow the gap between project construction and actual production. NMDC had recently been reviewing trial operations across different parts of the project, including slurry receiving systems, the induration machine, burner firing, additive grinding and the central control room.

For NMDC, the eventual commissioning of the plant would add 2 million tonnes of annual pellet-making capacity to its portfolio and strengthen its presence in the value-added side of the iron ore business. The indurating machine's light-up is one step in that process, but an important one.
