Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) defied domestic headwinds to post its highest-ever monthly sales of 2,36,963 units in January 2026. While the domestic market remained largely flat, a massive 88% surge in exports and robust demand for utility vehicles propelled the automaker to an 11.64% year-on-year growth.
The month highlighted a widening divergence in the automaker's portfolio: while the new mid-size SUV Victoris and the utility segment flourished, the traditional small-car segments (Mini and Compact) faced continued pressure.

Export Strategy Pays Off
The standout narrative from the January data is the unprecedented demand for Maruti Suzuki vehicles in international markets. Exports skyrocketed by 88.26 percent to hit an all-time monthly high of 51,020 units, up from just 27,100 units in the same month last year.
Domestic Shift: SUVs Overtake Hatchbacks
The domestic narrative is dominated by the structural shift toward Utility Vehicles.
- The 'Victoris' Effect: The newly launched mid-size SUV, Victoris, has been a runaway success, crossing the 50,000 cumulative sales milestone this month. Alongside the Brezza and Grand Vitara, it helped the UV segment grow by 16% to 75,609 units.
- Compact Segment: In sharp contrast, the bread-and-butter compact segment (Baleno, Swift, Dzire, WagonR) witnessed a sharp contraction, falling by nearly 6 percent to 72,738 units from 82,241 units in the previous year.
- Mini Segment: The entry-level mini category (Alto, S-Presso) remained flat, posting 14,268 units, virtually unchanged from the 14,247 units sold in January 2025.
- Zero Ciaz Sales: Notably, the mid-size sedan Ciaz recorded zero dispatches for the month, signaling a potential shift in strategy for that specific model line.
Supply Chain & Outlook
Despite the sales record, production constraints remain a bottleneck. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), revealed that the company is sitting on an order backlog of roughly 1.75 lakh units.
- Price Protection: To prevent cancellations due to long waiting periods, MSIL has introduced a price protection scheme for current bookings, shielding customers from imminent price hikes.
- Expansion: Relief is expected in April 2026, when the new manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, is slated to commence operations, adding critical capacity to meet the domestic backlog.
Month-on-Month Performance
On a sequential basis, the momentum remains positive but heavily skewed towards exports. compared to December 2025, when total sales stood at 217,854 units, the January figures represent a healthy month-on-month increase. However, this was largely driven by the doubling of export volumes (from roughly 25,700 in December to over 51,000 in January), while domestic passenger vehicle sales actually saw a minor dip from the 178,646 units sold in December.
Data Verification & Analysis
- Primary Driver: Exports (+23,920 units volume gain) accounted for nearly all of the net growth in total sales.
- Top Performer: Utility Vehicles segment, driven by the new Victoris model.
- Laggard: Compact segment (down ~9,500 units).
Outlook and Capacity Expansion
Investors and analysts are now looking toward the upcoming capacity expansions to unlock domestic volume growth. The company’s new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana, is scheduled to commence operations by April 2026, which is expected to alleviate the current production bottlenecks. Additionally, the impending domestic launch of the e-Vitara later this month could provide a fresh trigger for the brand in the burgeoning EV space.
While the stock market reaction remained tepid with shares trading flat to marginally lower—likely pricing in the Q3 profit miss reported earlier, the record sales volume confirms that Maruti Suzuki’s market dominance remains intact, pivoting successfully from a small-car giant to a formidable SUV player with a massive global footprint.
