Chhattisgarh’s Mineral Revenue: Record Growth, Strategic Auctions & 2026 Outlook

Chhattisgarh has recorded a strong rise in mineral revenue during the current financial year, with collections crossing ₹10,300 crore by December FY26. The performance places the state firmly on track to achieve its full year mineral revenue target of ₹17,000 crore, supported by steady coal and iron ore output, improved royalty realisation, and a growing reliance on transparent auction mechanisms.

Revenue Performance and Trend

The latest figures underline the sustained expansion of Chhattisgarh’s mining economy.

  • Mineral revenue till December FY26 stands at approximately ₹10,345 crore
  • The state has set a ₹17,000 crore mineral revenue target for FY26
  • FY25 closed with a record mineral revenue in the range of ₹14,200 to ₹14,600 crore
  • At the time of state formation in 2000, annual mineral revenue was about ₹429 crore

The mineral sector currently contributes close to 10 percent of the state’s gross domestic product, while Chhattisgarh accounts for nearly 17 percent of India’s total mineral output, highlighting its strategic role in the national raw materials ecosystem.

Key Drivers of Growth

Coal and Iron Ore Output
Coal remains the backbone of mineral revenue, driven by stable production from major coalfields in Korba, Raigarh, and Surguja. Iron ore dispatches from the Bailadila region continue to support royalty inflows, particularly amid consistent domestic steel demand.

Auction Led Revenue Upside
The increasing use of e auctions for mineral block allocation has improved transparency and enhanced premium realisation. Competitive bidding has led to higher upfront payments and stronger long term revenue visibility for the state.

Operational and Digital Reforms
Digitisation of mining operations, dispatch tracking, and royalty assessment has reduced leakages and improved compliance, contributing directly to higher collections.

Push Towards Critical Minerals

Chhattisgarh has begun diversifying beyond bulk minerals by entering the critical minerals space. The state recently auctioned a lithium block, marking a strategic shift towards minerals essential for electric mobility, battery storage, and advanced manufacturing. Exploration initiatives are also underway for lithium, niobium, tantalum, and rare earth elements, which could unlock new revenue streams over the medium to long term.

District Mineral Foundation and Development Spending

Mining revenues are being increasingly channelled into regional development through the District Mineral Foundation framework.

  • Total DMF collections have crossed ₹16,700 crore
  • Over 1,07,000 development works have been sanctioned
  • Around 76,000 projects have already been completed

Funds are being deployed for healthcare, drinking water, education, rural infrastructure, and livelihood initiatives in mining affected districts.

Mineral Base and Exploration Potential

Chhattisgarh hosts more than 28 varieties of minerals, including coal, iron ore, limestone, dolomite, bauxite, manganese, gold, graphite, and tin. Ongoing geological surveys and exploration programs are expected to expand reserves and extend mine life cycles across several districts.

Outlook

State officials have indicated that mineral revenue could rise to ₹25,000 crore over the next three years, supported by new block auctions, deeper exploration activity, and downstream industrial development. For steel producers, power generators, traders, and investors, Chhattisgarh’s mining roadmap offers improved supply stability, greater transparency, and emerging opportunities in critical minerals.

Environmental compliance, sustainable mining practices, and tighter control over illegal mining will remain key factors shaping the sector’s long term performance.
