The Government of Maharashtra has signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) worth over ₹48,000 crore with leading companies from the automobile, electric vehicle, and steel sectors, marking a significant step toward accelerating industrial development in the Vidarbha region.
The agreements were formalised on February 6, 2026, at the Advantage Vidarbha – Khasdar Audyogik Mahotsav 2026 held in Nagpur, in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways.
The MoUs underline Maharashtra’s strategy to position Vidarbha as a future hub for automobile manufacturing, electric mobility, and steel production, while also addressing regional economic imbalance within the state.
Major Investment Commitments
Mahindra & Mahindra – ₹15,000 Crore
The largest investment commitment was made by Mahindra & Mahindra, which signed an MoU to invest ₹15,000 crore in expanding its manufacturing footprint in Nagpur.
The proposed facility will build upon the company’s existing tractor plant and is expected to manufacture a mix of:
-
Electric vehicles
-
Internal combustion engine vehicles
-
Tractors and farm equipment
The project is aimed at serving both domestic and export markets, strengthening Nagpur’s position as an automotive manufacturing centre.
enMotive (Germany) – ₹3,200 Crore
German electric mobility company enMotive committed an investment of ₹3,200 crore to set up advanced manufacturing operations in Nagpur.
A key highlight of this project is the introduction of giga casting technology, which is expected to support India’s growing electric three-wheeler and commercial EV ecosystem, while improving production efficiency and component integration.
Super Smelters – Over ₹10,000 Crore
Steel manufacturer Super Smelters signed an MoU involving investment exceeding ₹10,000 crore, reinforcing Vidarbha’s emerging role in India’s steel value chain.
The investment aligns with the state government’s broader plan to develop Gadchiroli and surrounding districts as future steel production zones, leveraging locally available high-grade iron ore resources.
Vidarbha’s Strategic Industrial Vision
The Maharashtra government outlined a long-term roadmap focused on:
-
Nagpur as a manufacturing and logistics hub, supported by planned land acquisition of nearly 5,000 acres
-
Gadchiroli as a steel manufacturing cluster, with multiple steel projects reportedly in the pipeline
-
Improved connectivity, infrastructure, and industrial support systems to attract large-scale investments
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted that iron ore reserves in Gadchiroli are among the highest quality in the country, creating strong fundamentals for downstream steel investments.
Employment and Economic Impact
The investments announced under the ₹48,000 crore MoUs are expected to:
-
Generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs across manufacturing, logistics, and ancillary industries
-
Stimulate the growth of local MSMEs and supplier ecosystems
-
Enhance Maharashtra’s contribution to automobile exports, EV manufacturing, and steel production
These developments are likely to have a multiplier effect on regional income levels, skill development, and infrastructure growth.
A Step Toward Balanced Regional Development
The MoU signing reflects Maharashtra’s broader industrial policy of decentralising growth beyond traditional urban centres and creating multiple industrial corridors across the state.
By attracting marquee automotive and steel investments into Vidarbha, the state aims to transform the region into a self-sustaining industrial ecosystem, while strengthening Maharashtra’s position as one of India’s leading manufacturing destinations.
