RINL Returns to Cash Profit as Operational Revival Gains Momentum at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

India’s public sector steel producer Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has reported a significant operational turnaround, with the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) returning to cash profitability after a prolonged period of financial stress.

Cash Profit Signals Operational Recovery

RINL recorded a cash profit of around ₹54 crore in January 2026, marking an important milestone in the revival of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The development reflects a notable shift from the financial losses that the company had been facing over the past few years.

Market participants view the return to cash profitability as an early indication that operational restructuring and financial support measures are beginning to deliver results.

Government Support Strengthens Revival Efforts

The turnaround follows a comprehensive revival strategy supported by both the Central Government and the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

A financial revival package of ₹11,440 crore provided critical liquidity support and helped stabilise operations at the steel plant. In addition to financial assistance, state-level measures including relief related to power charges, taxes, and water supply costs helped ease operational pressures and improve the company’s cash flow position.

These steps enabled the steel producer to gradually restore production levels and improve operational stability.

Production Improves with Blast Furnace Operations

Operational performance has strengthened significantly as all three blast furnaces at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant are currently operating.

With the resumption of full furnace operations:

  • Daily hot metal production has increased to nearly 19,400 tonnes

  • Capacity utilisation has improved to around 94 percent

Higher production levels have helped the company improve operational efficiency while spreading fixed costs across larger output volumes.

Gradual Stabilisation After Years of Financial Stress

RINL had been facing considerable financial pressure in recent years due to multiple challenges, including:

  • A heavy debt burden

  • High raw material costs

  • Dependence on imported coking coal

  • Low capacity utilisation in previous years

These factors had placed significant strain on the company’s financial position and operational continuity.

However, the combination of financial restructuring, improved production levels, and government support has helped the company move toward a more stable operating environment.

Market Pulse Insight

The operational recovery of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant carries broader implications for India’s steel sector.

With an installed crude steel capacity of about 7.3 million tonnes per annum, improved utilisation at the plant could contribute to stronger domestic steel supply and support industrial activity in the region.

RINL’s gradual turnaround highlights the importance of capacity utilisation, policy support, and operational efficiency in reviving stressed industrial assets within India’s steel ecosystem.
