JK Cement Joins India’s Top 5 League: ₹500 Cr Buxar Plant Pushes Total Capacity to 31.26 MTPA

JK Cement Ltd. has now made the commercial operation of its 3.0 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) grey cement grinding unit at Buxar, Bihar, effective from January 29, 2026. This greenfield project worth ₹500 crores increases the company’s total installed capacity to 31.26 MTPA, making it the 5th largest grey cement producer in India.

Strategic 'Eastern Gambit': Speed as a Weapon

The Buxar plant represents a decisive shift in the company’s focus from its North-Central domains to the rapidly expanding Eastern market. Strategically positioned on the Patna-Buxar national highway, the plant reduces delivery times to Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh to less than 24 hours. This reduces the company’s dependence on its Prayagraj plant, thereby providing a clear competitive advantage over existing regional players such as Dalmia Bharat and Nuvoco Vistas. Dr. Raghavpat Singhania, Managing Director, JK Cement Ltd., emphasized that the company’s focus on local production helps it penetrate deeper into the rural housing sector, which contributes 60-65% to the demand in the state.

Financials: Volume Surge vs. Margin Compression

The commissioning aligns with a quarter defined by aggressive volume expansion at the expense of short-term margins. For Q3 FY26 (ended December 2025):

  • Revenue: Rose 18.18% YoY to ₹3,463 crore, driven by a 23% volume surge.
  • Net Profit: Declined to ₹173.6 crore (vs. ₹189 crore in Q3 FY25), reflecting higher input costs and competitive pricing. This volume-first strategy aims to maximize long-term operating leverage despite immediate profit headwinds.

Market Landscape & Sustainability

Eastern India, with per capita consumption below the national average of ~290 kg, remains a key battleground. JK Cement enters as pricing power stabilizes; January 2026 saw regional price hikes of ₹30-50 per bag.

The plant also advances ESG goals, utilizing fly ash to lower the clinker factor and incorporating energy-efficient grinding systems. This supports the company’s target to increase its green power mix to 50% by FY26.

Market Reaction

Following the announcement, JK Cement shares traded between ₹5,542 – ₹5,670 on the NSE, valuing the company at approximately ₹43,000 crore. Analysts maintain a 'Hold' to 'Accumulate' rating, closely monitoring the new unit's ramp-up and margin contribution.
