To put the numbers into perspective, benchmark steel prices in India have seen a steep upward revision. Primary rebar (TMT) costs climbed aggressively from roughly ₹47,615 per tonne at the close of the last quarter to near ₹59,800 per tonne. Similarly, hot-rolled coils (HRC) surged from ₹47,317 to around ₹55,900 per tonne. Because nearly all of the metal produced in this region is earmarked for export, constraints around the Strait of Hormuz triggered a ripple effect across international shipping routes, causing ocean freight rates to surge by nearly 40 percent almost overnight.
Conversely, the rally in steel prices is driven by a mix of raw material inflation and domestic regulatory shifts. Crucially for the steel sector, the price of premium low-volatile (PLV) hard coking coal recently spiked to 13-month highs, surpassing $207 per tonne on a freight-on-board basis. Domestically, the government's extension of a three-year safeguard duty on select steel imports—levying an 11 to 12 percent tariff—effectively curbed the inflow of cheap foreign materials. Similarly, the real estate and infrastructure sectors are demonstrating proactive agility. Top-tier developers are mitigating delays and cost overruns by maintaining robust advance planning. The domestic market is smartly holding onto a 0.9 to 1.0x monthly demand inventory across the finished steel value chain, acting as a vital buffer against immediate global supply shocks. Furthermore, large integrated metal producers in India are leveraging their backward integration and captive raw material access to improve their EBITDA margins by an estimated 18 to 22 percent, providing a strong financial anchor for the broader industrial sector.
Future Outlook and Lasting Stability
Looking ahead, the tone remains cautiously optimistic. While volatility in finished metal prices may persist through the next quarter, the broader macroeconomic fundamentals suggest a looming stabilization.
The underlying engine of domestic production remains incredibly robust. Between April and February, India produced an impressive 153.6 million tonnes of crude steel, marking an 11 percent year-on-year growth, while domestic consumption grew by a healthy 7.2 percent. The World Steel Association forecasts that India will sustain an annual steel demand growth of approximately 7 to 9 percent through 2026.
Market analysts project that the current high-price environment will naturally self-regulate. By the middle of the year, the price of flat steel and HRC is expected to find a stable trading range between ₹51,000 and ₹62,000 per tonne.
