Geographically, the production landscape is witnessing both consolidation and localized disruption. Odisha has firmly retained its position as the largest pellet-producing state in the country. Output from the eastern state rose by 16 percent to 21.5 million metric tonnes, heavily supported by elevated production rates at integrated facilities owned by AM/NS and Jindal Steel, alongside steady operations across smaller merchant plants. Karnataka held its ground as the second-largest contributor, posting a 12 percent growth to reach 10.3 million metric tonnes.

However, the most aggressive market realignment has emerged from Maharashtra. The western state registered the sharpest growth among all major producing regions, with its pellet output skyrocketing by 56 percent to 7.8 million metric tonnes. This localized boom is largely attributed to rapid capacity ramp-ups by major players like Lloyds Metal. Such aggressive expansion has disrupted traditional supply dynamics across several domestic markets. JSW Group continues to lead the pack, growing its pellet output by 14 percent to 14.8 million metric tonnes. AM/NS India stood out as the fastest-growing major producer, accelerating its output by an impressive 41 percent to 8.0 million metric tonnes. Other key players, including Tata Steel and Jindal Steel Limited, reported outputs of 6.4 million metric tonnes and 5.7 million metric tonnes, translating to solid growth rates of 6.6 percent and 37 percent respectively.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE STEEL INDUSTRY

The data from the first half of 2026 highlights a fundamental structural evolution within the Indian steel industry: a pivot away from export dependency toward deep domestic integration. Historically, merchant pellet producers relied heavily on overseas markets to maintain operating margins. However, weaker international demand and cautious global buying have reduced current export opportunities. Pellet exports plummeted by 24 percent to 2.2 million metric tonnes, while imports remained virtually flat at around 1.1 million metric tonnes.

In previous years, such a steep drop in exports might have forced severe production cuts. Instead, domestic consumption has comfortably absorbed the surplus. Blast furnace operators consumed approximately 31 million metric tonnes of pellets during this six-month window, up from 24 million metric tonnes a year earlier. This 29 percent surge underscores a growing technical preference for pellets over traditional sinter in integrated steelmaking, driven by the need for higher furnace productivity and stricter environmental emission controls. India’s total pellet capacity expanded by roughly 8.5 percent over the past fiscal year, reaching 179 million metric tonnes.
