Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd (SMEL) has completed the construction of a stainless steel hot-rolled coil (HRC) manufacturing facility at its integrated steel plant in Sambalpur, Odisha, strengthening its downstream capabilities and product diversification strategy.
Facility Details and Product Focus
The newly commissioned unit has an installed capacity of 300,000 tonnes per annum and is designed to produce 200-series and 400-series stainless steel hot-rolled coils. These grades are widely used across automotive components, construction, kitchenware, fabrication and general engineering applications.
The project leverages SMEL’s integrated operating model, supported by captive direct-reduced iron (DRI), ferroalloys and power generation, which is expected to enhance cost efficiency, supply reliability and operating margins.
Strategic Significance
India’s stainless steel consumption has been expanding at an estimated 6–7% annual growth rate, driven by infrastructure development, rising urbanisation, increasing appliance demand and wider use of stainless steel in transportation and public utilities. Demand for flat stainless products, including HRC, has been rising faster than long products due to increased downstream fabrication activity.
With the addition of the Sambalpur HRC unit, SMEL aims to:
- Reduce dependence on external suppliers for flat stainless steel
- Improve its product mix toward higher-value downstream segments
- Strengthen its presence in both domestic and export markets
Planned Downstream Expansion
In addition to the HRC facility, SMEL has announced further downstream investments at the Sambalpur complex:
- A bright bar manufacturing unit with a capacity of 25,000 tonnes per annum
- A stainless steel wire production unit with a capacity of 18,000 tonnes per annum
These units are expected to be commissioned by mid-2027. The total estimated investment for the expansion is around USD 687 million, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to value addition and product diversification.

The commissioning of the stainless steel HRC facility aligns with a broader industry trend among Indian steelmakers toward downstream integration, import substitution and margin stability. While global stainless steel markets remain exposed to nickel price volatility and trade uncertainties, India’s domestic demand outlook remains relatively resilient.
