NMDC Reports 23 Percent Growth in Iron Ore Production to 27 MT During First Half of FY27

India’s largest state-owned iron ore miner, NMDC Limited, has demonstrated a robust operational performance during the first half of the 2026-27 financial year. The company recorded a significant 23 percent year-on-year increase in its cumulative iron ore production, underscoring its pivotal role in feeding raw materials to the expanding domestic steel industry. This production momentum indicates a strong supply-side push, even as sales volumes reflect a more measured demand environment. The aggressive extraction rates perfectly align with the company's broader strategic vision to secure India's raw material supply chain.

Production surge highlights operational efficiency

The latest provisional data released by NMDC highlights a marked acceleration in its mining activities. During the April-September period of the ongoing financial year, the company successfully extracted 27.27 million tonnes (MT) of iron ore. This represents a substantial 22.8 percent jump from the 22.20 MT produced during the corresponding six-month period of the previous fiscal year.

This impressive growth trajectory was maintained despite the traditional logistical hurdles associated with the Indian monsoon season. In September 2026 alone, NMDC's iron ore output rose by 7.7 percent to reach 4.04 MT, compared to 3.75 MT in September 2025. A breakdown of the regional performance reveals that the mineral-rich Chhattisgarh division continues to be the primary engine of this growth. Cumulative production from the Chhattisgarh mines reached 18.92 MT through September, significantly up from 14.78 MT in the year-ago period. Meanwhile, the Karnataka operations also contributed positively, recording a 22 percent increase in production to 1.54 MT in September, pushing its cumulative half-yearly output to 8.35 MT. This synchronized effort across major mining assets guarantees a steady and uninterrupted flow of high-grade raw materials.

Sales volumes remain steady amid market caution

While production surged ahead, the company's sales metrics present a slightly more complex picture of the current market dynamics. Cumulative sales for the first half of FY27 remained essentially flat, settling at 22.23 MT, matching the volumes recorded in the same period last year.

Looking at the monthly data, iron ore sales actually experienced a contraction in September. Total sales for the month declined by 9.5 percent to 3.51 MT, down from the 3.88 MT dispatched in September 2025. This divergence between high production rates (4.04 MT) and lower sales (3.51 MT) in September suggests that domestic steel mills are currently adopting a cautious, need-based procurement strategy. The cautious off-take can be attributed to the traditional monsoon-related slowdown in downstream construction activities, which temporarily suppresses immediate steel consumption. However, by actively maintaining high production run-rates and building inventory, NMDC is ensuring that a massive supply buffer is ready for deployment as soon as the post-monsoon industrial demand accelerates.

Diversification strategy to drive future growth

Beyond its core iron ore operations, NMDC is actively executing a broader strategic vision to transform into India's premier integrated mineral mining company. The Ministry of Steel enterprise is taking decisive steps to diversify its product portfolio and reduce the nation's reliance on imported raw materials.

A key component of this diversification is the company's entry into the coal sector. NMDC is scheduled to commence commercial production of thermal coal during the upcoming October-December quarter. The miner has set an ambitious initial target to sell approximately 1 MT of this dry fuel within the current financial year. Furthermore, the company is laying the groundwork for metallurgical coal extraction. Plans are already in motion to develop a dedicated coking coal mine starting in FY27, with full-scale production anticipated as early as FY28. These strategic forays into coal mining are crucial for the domestic metals industry, as they promise to lower procurement costs and shield local steelmakers from the severe price volatility of international seaborne coal markets, ultimately fostering a more resilient and self-sufficient manufacturing ecosystem.
