Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Minerals & Metals (M&M) business has secured major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) orders valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and other domestic customers, reinforcing its leadership position in India’s heavy industrial infrastructure segment.
According to company disclosures and industry reports, the newly awarded contracts are linked to large-scale steel plant capacity expansion, sinter plant construction, and advanced material-handling systems, aligned with India’s broader objective of scaling up domestic steelmaking capacity.
Key Projects Under SAIL Expansion Programme
A significant portion of the order inflow is associated with SAIL’s ongoing modernisation and expansion initiatives at its major integrated steel plants.
At the IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal, L&T has been awarded a comprehensive EPC package as part of the expansion of crude steel capacity from approximately 2.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 6.5 MTPA. The scope includes critical upstream and core process facilities such as:
-
Coke Oven Battery
-
By-Product Plant
-
Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)
-
Integrated material-handling systems
These facilities are essential to supporting higher blast furnace productivity and downstream steelmaking operations.
In addition, L&T has secured the contract to set up Sinter Plant No. 2 at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, a key upstream unit required to ensure raw material availability for expanded blast furnace operations.
Orders from Other Domestic Metals Clients
Beyond SAIL, L&T’s Minerals & Metals arm has also won orders from other Indian customers for bulk material-handling solutions, including wagon tipplers and stacker-reclaimer systems. These systems play a critical role in improving logistics efficiency, reducing turnaround time, and enhancing throughput across steel and metals facilities.
As per L&T’s internal classification, contracts in the ₹5,000–10,000 crore range are categorised as “major orders,” reflecting their scale, technical complexity, and long execution horizon.
Strategic Significance
The latest order wins further strengthen L&T’s already robust EPC order book and underline its execution capabilities in complex, capital-intensive metallurgical projects. The awards also highlight continued capital investment by Indian steel producers as they align capacity expansion with national targets for infrastructure growth, manufacturing self-reliance, and long-term demand from construction, automotive, and energy sectors.
Industry analysts note that such large EPC contracts typically generate strong downstream economic impact, including demand for equipment, construction services, skilled manpower, and allied engineering supply chains.
Outlook
With India targeting a substantial increase in crude steel capacity over the next decade, engineering majors like L&T are expected to play a central role in delivering large-scale industrial infrastructure. The latest order inflows from SAIL and domestic metals clients position L&T favourably to capitalise on sustained investment momentum in the steel and metals sector.
