India's Steel Production Holds Steady in June as Exports Surge 34%, Domestic Demand Remains Strong

India's steel industry maintained stable production levels in June 2026 while recording a sharp rise in finished steel exports, reflecting improving global demand and sustained domestic market strength. Despite higher outbound shipments, the country remained a net importer of finished steel as imports continued to outpace exports.

Key Highlights

  • Crude Steel Production: 14.06 million tonnes (+3.9% YoY)
  • Finished Steel Production: 13.80 million tonnes (+6.0% YoY)
  • Finished Steel Consumption: 14.21 million tonnes (+7.0% YoY)
  • Finished Steel Exports: 0.57 million tonnes (+34.3% YoY)
  • Finished Steel Imports: 0.70 million tonnes (+7.8% YoY)

Steel Production Remains Resilient Amid Global Uncertainty

India's crude steel production stood at 14.06 million tonnes in June 2026, remaining broadly stable compared to May while registering a 3.9% year on year increase. Finished steel production also recorded healthy growth, rising around 6% to 13.80 million tonnes, highlighting the industry's ability to maintain operational stability despite the seasonal impact of the monsoon and ongoing global market uncertainties.

On the demand side, finished steel consumption reached 14.21 million tonnes, up 7% over the previous year. Although the pace moderated slightly from May's stronger growth, domestic demand continued to be supported by infrastructure projects, construction activity and manufacturing expansion, ensuring healthy capacity utilisation across steel mills.

Exports Register Strong Growth Despite India Remaining a Net Importer

One of the most notable developments during June was the sharp recovery in India's finished steel exports. Overseas shipments increased by 34.3% year on year, reflecting improving international demand and better competitiveness of Indian steel in global markets. At the same time, finished steel imports also grew by 7.8%, resulting in India continuing to remain a net importer during the month.

The export growth indicates that Indian steel producers are gradually strengthening their presence in overseas markets even as domestic demand continues to absorb a significant portion of production. Higher exports also provide manufacturers with an opportunity to diversify sales and improve capacity utilisation amid changing global trade dynamics.

Q1 FY27 Reflects Healthy Growth Across the Steel Value Chain

The April-June quarter paints an encouraging picture for India's steel sector. Crude steel production reached 42.06 million tonnes, registering a 3% increase over the corresponding period last year. Finished steel production grew 6% to 40.99 million tonnes, while finished steel consumption climbed 8.3% to 41.57 million tonnes, underscoring the resilience of domestic demand.

The sustained increase in production and consumption highlights India's emergence as one of the world's strongest steel demand centres. Continued government investment in infrastructure, urban development, railways, renewable energy and manufacturing is expected to support long term steel consumption, even as global markets remain volatile.

Market Impact

Stable production coupled with rising exports is a positive signal for the domestic steel industry. Higher overseas shipments can help improve mill realisations while reducing inventory pressure, particularly if export demand remains firm over the coming months.

For the ferro alloys sector, steady steel production translates into consistent demand for inputs such as silicon manganese and ferro chrome. Iron ore miners, logistics providers and downstream engineering companies are also expected to benefit from sustained activity across the steel value chain.

Outlook

India's steel industry enters the second quarter of FY27 on a solid footing. Domestic consumption continues to provide the primary growth engine, while improving exports offer an additional avenue for demand. Market participants will closely monitor infrastructure spending, monsoon-related construction activity, global steel prices and trade policies to assess whether export momentum can be sustained alongside robust domestic demand.
