This upward pricing momentum is being driven by a powerful dual catalyst: a steady increase in imported raw material costs and a sharp revival in domestic consumption as the monsoon season comes to a close. For the broader manufacturing ecosystem, the market's ability to easily absorb these price increases serves as a highly encouraging indicator of underlying economic strength heading into the busy third quarter.
Rising input costs prompt strategic price revisions
The primary driver behind the immediate price revisions is the escalating cost of metallurgical coal in the international seaborne market. Because Indian integrated steel mills import approximately 85 percent of their annual coking coal requirements, domestic production costs are heavily exposed to global pricing movements. Over the past few weeks, premium hard coking coal prices on a free-on-board (FOB) Australia basis have steadily climbed, recently trading in the range of $240 to $245 per tonne.
This sustained increase in raw material expenses is squeezing the operational margins of blast furnace operators. To protect their profitability, major steelmakers are actively passing these costs down the supply chain. Market assessments indicate that benchmark hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices have already started firming up, hovering around ₹54,500 to ₹55,000 per tonne on an ex-Mumbai basis. Industry insiders expect mills to push for an additional hike of ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per tonne by mid-September to fully offset the imported coal burden.

While cost-push inflation is a major factor, these price hikes would not be sustainable without genuine downstream demand to support them. Fortunately, the timing of these raw material price increases aligns perfectly with the end of the Indian monsoon season. Historically, the heavy rains between July and August force a temporary halt on large-scale outdoor civil construction and infrastructure projects, leading to sluggish steel off-take.
As the weather clears in September, construction activities are resuming at an aggressive pace. Government-backed capital expenditure on national highways, dedicated freight corridors, and urban metro expansions is rapidly gaining momentum. Contractors are rushing to procure structural steel, TMT bars, and heavy plates to meet strict project delivery deadlines for the remainder of the fiscal year. This sudden rush of bulk procurement is rapidly depleting plant-level inventories, giving primary steel mills the pricing power necessary to implement and sustain their price hikes.
Automotive sector inventory buildup fuels flat steel demand
Beyond heavy infrastructure, the consumer-driven manufacturing sectors are also playing a crucial role in absorbing higher steel prices. The domestic passenger vehicle market has shown remarkable resilience, recently posting massive double-digit growth in retail sales. Automakers are currently operating their assembly lines at peak capacity to build sufficient dealer inventory ahead of the lucrative Diwali and Dussehra festive season.
This rapid production run-rate in the automotive sector translates directly into massive order books for high-grade flat steel products, particularly cold-rolled coils (CRC) and galvanized sheets. Consumer durables manufacturers, including producers of white goods like refrigerators and washing machines, are also heavily procuring flat steel to meet anticipated festive consumer spending. Because these value-added steel products are highly critical to the final consumer goods, downstream manufacturers are generally more willing to accept moderate price increases to ensure uninterrupted supply.
A healthy signal for the broader manufacturing sector
From a macroeconomic perspective, the current pricing dynamics in the Indian steel sector represent a highly balanced and healthy market. When prices rise solely due to input costs in a weak market, it often leads to stalled projects and industrial slowdowns. However, the current scenario demonstrates that domestic demand is robust enough to comfortably absorb these cost transfers.
